This Framework provides a structured way of thinking which, it is hoped, will be a useful first step for helping decision makers address the complex health and environmental sustainability challenges they face in an integrated way. This document can be used to help decision makers at any stage of the food and drink supply chain develop or amend a product or process so that it addresses health and environmental sustainability considerations in a joined-up way. The Framework has four parts, each intended to address a key question (What are the relevant issues? What is our baseline and where do we want to get to? How do we develop a product or process that addresses health and environmental sustainability considerations in a joined up way? How do we get others on board?). The first two parts of the Framework are the key to challenging thinking. Nevertheless, decision makers may choose to use all or only some of these parts, depending on their current situation.
